PCT 2019: Desert Redemption
PCT 2019: Desert Redemption

INTRODUCTION

For our summer vacation Cosmo and I decided we would spend a month and a half walking in the Sierra Nevada. We made plans to hike the High Sierra Trail and explore new territory in our favorite mountain range.

We arrived at Walker Pass Campground feeling strong and with a desire to keep walking, so onward we went! We mingled with hikers at our newly earned seat at the Walker Pass picnic table.

Day 16

July 3RD, 2019

In the morning, Cosmo and I enjoyed a short trail run to the scenic Lone Pine Lake and then traveled south to Lancaster to fill up on resupply food and prepare for the next part of our summer adventure.

We woke up at 2:30am in a rest stop parking lot off of Highway 395. It was dark outside and we were exhausted but needed to be at the Agnew Meadows parking area in Mammoth, CA no later than 7:00am (the time when the shuttles begin and the roads are closed to regular cars).

A restaurant at a trailhead can be a dangerous thing, especially when that restaurant has vegan options and outdoor seating. Cosmo and I sat on the patio of the Cedar Grove Lodge, overlooking Copper Creek, and enjoyed our non-dehydrated breakfast (and lunch).

The trail to Muir Pass is buried underneath miles of glistening snow fields. In a high snow year, such as this, the snow covers miles of ground on both sides of the pass.

Followed the Desert Trail route through the rugged Pueblo Mountains. A cross-country adventure, guided by rock cairns, with tough climbs, descents, and bushwhacking through sage and bunchgrass-covered slopes.
